Sussex Ramblers

Volunteer

There are lots of volunteering opportunities with the Sussex Area Ramblers.

For example, you might want to become a walk leader, a Local Footpath Warden, or get involved in path maintenance, and we are always looking for people to take on organisational  roles.

Ramblers volunteers

Want to stay physically and mentally active, connect with nature, build community, and help preserve Sussex’s beautiful walking paths for all to enjoy? Then why not join the Sussex Area of the Ramblers Association as a volunteer.

Volunteering is often seen as a selfless act, but the truth is, it's mutually beneficial. When you give your time to help others, you don’t just contribute to a cause – you enrich your own life in countless ways. Volunteering for the Sussex Ramblers is no exception. Whether you’re passionate about nature, community, protecting our countryside, or simply want to become more active, here’s how joining our group of walking enthusiasts could be the perfect way to make a positive impact…

1. Connect with nature

Spending time in nature is proven to reduce stress, boost mental health and improve overall wellbeing – and we really are blessed in Sussex. After all, our counties are home to some of the country’s most breathtaking walks. From the stunning South Downs National Park to picturesque coastal routes, our volunteer opportunities give you the chance to explore and enjoy the great outdoors in a myriad of ways.

2. Improve physical fitness

Engaging in regular volunteer activities with the Sussex Ramblers will give you motivation to stay physically active. Whether you’re assisting in path-clearing, organising group walks, or helping keep rights of way open and accessible, you’re likely to be getting those steps in. Walking is a fantastic form of low-impact exercise that benefits your cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, improves joint mobility, enhances coordination and balance, and reduces cortisol to lower stress levels.

3. Make an impact

When you volunteer with the Sussex Ramblers, you’re contributing to something lasting and meaningful. The Ramblers Association works to protect and enhance the UK’s footpaths and countryside, ensuring that future generations will also be able to enjoy it for years to come. Many rights of way need regular upkeep and care and our volunteers help to keep these paths open, accessible, and safe for everyone – from seasoned hikers to those simply looking for a weekend stroll. Whether you’re out clearing invasive species from a well-worn route, or lobbying to keep a public right of way open, your work has a direct and visible impact on the environment and the community.

4. Develop new skills

Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time – it’s also about learning and growing within yourself. The Ramblers Association offers a range of opportunities for volunteers to gain valuable skills. From leadership and group management, to practical conservation techniques, you’ll develop abilities that can be applied to many areas of your life through hands-on learning experience.

5. Make new friends

One of the best parts of volunteering is meeting like-minded people. Volunteering with the Sussex Ramblers connects you with a diverse group of individuals who share your love of nature and the outdoors. Many people join the Ramblers for the camaraderie that comes with it. Whether you’re sharing a cup of tea after a long walk, working together on a conservation project, or planning events, these shared experiences foster lasting friendships. It’s a way to feel more connected to your local community while giving back to the environment.

6. Boost mental wellbeing

Volunteering is proven to boost mental health, and that’s especially true when it involves spending time outdoors. Walking in nature has been shown to reduce anxiety, lower depression, and improve overall mood. These health benefits together with the satisfaction of knowing you’re making a difference can leave you with a deep sense of purpose. Getting involved with the Sussex Ramblers gives you the opportunity to take a break from the grind of daily life, and allows you to engage in something positive, meaningful and grounding.

7. Boost cognitive health

You might be surprised to hear that not all of our volunteer opportunities involve hours spent in the great outdoors – some of them mean less physical activity, and more brain power. These desk-based jobs inevitably involve a significant amount of home-based screen time: web editing, taking notes, keeping an eye on cash flow, responding to emails, and preparing or reviewing documents (such as planning applications and footpath diversion proposals), maps and surveys. Roles on the Executive and Area Council such as Countryside Officers, Vice Chairs, Footpaths Officers, Treasurers, Web Masters and Communications and Publicity Officers are prime examples of volunteer opportunities which are less physically and more mentally challenging. It’s proven that a sedentary lifestyle can hasten our physical decline, but interestingly a Cambridge University study has also shown that people with desk jobs are far less likely to experience cognitive decline than those with physically active roles. So do spare a thought for the roles which may seem less thrilling – but which are still action-packed and can keep your grey matter in tip- top condition.

8. Protect the environment

The Ramblers Association is at the forefront of advocating for public access to green spaces, and volunteers play a vital role in this work. In Sussex, as in other areas, development and urban expansion can threaten public rights of way and natural habitats. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to get involved in campaigns to protect these essential spaces, and the Ramblers offers a platform for you to make your voice heard.

Volunteering doesn’t have to take up all your time. We understand that everyone has different commitments, and so our wide range of volunteering opportunities are flexible to accommodate busy schedules. Whether you can contribute regularly or prefer one-off events, there’s something for everyone. You can lead walks, participate in campaigns, or help with administrative tasks – whatever aligns with your availability and interests.

Whether you're passionate about conservation, advocating for public rights of way, or simply enjoy hiking, the Sussex Area of the Ramblers Association is the perfect outlet for your energy and enthusiasm.
