The Sussex Area of the Ramblers was formed in 1976 and membership across all age groups now stands at around 3,000. This includes nine Area groups, nine affiliated groups and a county-wide Young Walkers group.
As well as organising many leader-led walks every week, we work on behalf of all walkers, at both area and group level, to:
- Protect the network of public paths
- Safeguard the beauty of the countryside
- Campaign for greater access to open country
- Provide information and advice on all aspects of walking.
Some of our local successes include:
- Identifying over 1000 potential lost rights of way in East and West Sussex and filing around 180 claims to their use with the county councils.
- Supporting the launch of the East and West Sussex sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path
- Lobbying against a Center Parcs-style development near Battle and the proposed construction of a second runway at Gatwick
- Establishing a path maintenance team in West Sussex with the support of the County Council Rights of Way team, with similar efforts now under way in East Sussex.
